am I strange?

So last night Nikki and I are talking about her trip. She said that missions trip leader will stop by to sign the papers and that she had made some of her phone calls to get some support.

Then she stopped and finally said that she was upset because she know a guy that wants to go on the trip but his mother will not even discuss it. She said that it is dangerous and that she would not send her child into harms way and that was that.

Nikki asked me why I say yes to them every time they want to travel. I had to think about it for a moment. Why do I let my children just pack up and leave?

I finally said "Well there are a few reasons. One is that I think you should travel and see the world when the opportunity presents its self. And two because I know that are days are numbered and when our time is done it is done. Weather we are sitting a rocking chair or seeing the great wall of China"

Does that make me strange? Does that make me a bad mom because I do not worry when my children go off into the great unknown. Or does that make me a good mom for allowing my children to take advantage of every opportunity?

Today I have to go DMV and get a temp sticker for the car since we forgot that it had to be smogged and we know that it won't pass smog anyway! I have a gift card for a store out near the dmv, so I may do some shopping while I am out there.

Two of our friends will be home soon and I am getting so excited! I talked to one of their moms last night and we are making all the plans for the home coming. We have to try to buy enough food to feed 12 people and we have to do it on a budget! LOL Our house is going to be full, but at least it will be filled with people that I want to see. I so cannot wait to hug our friends and tell them thank you.

Ryan starts running club today and I hope that he likes it. I think it will be good for him to have something else to do. I guess we will see when I pick him up.

Let me tell you something and I mean this very sincerely... the best moms are the ones who can give their kids both roots AND wings! I had an epiphany back when my oldest was a little baby and very sick... hospitalized with pneumonia... on oxygen... it was a very scary time and I was so incredibly calm. A co-worker commented to a friend of mine that it must be because I was too young to understand... my friend replied that it was because I knew that God loved that baby more than I ever could. Once you realize your arms can only reach so far but His can reach everywhere they go... you stop worrying. We have friends who sent their teens to Romania last year. My brother has been to Kenya twice. You just go... or let your loved ones go... where life (God/fate) leads them and don't doubt... Leap and the net will appear!
Congratulations on finding the secret to being a great mom!
*hugs*

I think you are right in letting the kids take every oppotunity to see new things and live life.

I do not think you are any stranger than the rest of us..;-) seriously though i think allowing our kids to experience other cultures is one of the best educations you can give them..far too many of us never even think outside the box let alone live outside it...
Have a great day..
